Tumeric as a Tooth Whitener

I’m serious about trying this turmeric toothpaste suggestion for whitening teeth. I followed the recipe suggestions and used: 1 tablespoon coconut oil, 1 teaspoon turmeric root powder, and 2 drops of peppermint oil.
Day Two – Okay, I’ve used the turmeric toothpaste three times. I can report a very clean feeling, and maybe even some whitening. Beware, while it doesn’t stain your teeth it does stain fingernails. I’ll report on the whitening again next week.
Day Five – I said I would report back on the Turmeric Toothpaste blend (coconut oil, turmeric root powder, & salt) so here is what I learned: I feel there was some degree of whitening but ones teeth can only get so white and I am not a young puppy. However, a word of caution, I have two crowns, I am not sure what they are made of, probably porcelain or ceramic, they got really white so now they are whiter than my other teeth. This of course made me curious so I tried it on my tea cups and it was amazing at removing tea stains. Even more curious, I thought maybe it was just the coconut oil, but that did not work. Then, I tried it on my counter top but it left a yellow stain that I had to scrub out with a spray cleaner, don’t do that! And, remember, it stains fingernails. In the end, I do think it has value as a tooth whitener, and there should be some other good benefits beyond whitening. 2016-02-24 10.54.00

The benefits and ease of making Tinctures

Customers often get that starry-eyed look of confusion and panic when I talk to them about tinctures. Making tinctures is so easy and almost any spice or herb can be made into a tincture. If you ever made vanilla extract with alcohol you made a tincture.
The three most notable benefits of alcohol based tinctures are:
Alcohol is able to pull properties from the herb that water and vinegar can not pull.
Alcohol based tinctures store in your cub board for up to 2 years. Unlike syrups that need refrigeration and generally store for approximately 2 months.
You only need to take a small amount, generally 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon daily or as needed.
Dried herbs and root are a good choice, because they are fully or partially dehydrated they easily absorb the alcohol. I generally use a mason jar or the original alcohol bottle.
I said it is simple and truly it is:
Add herbs, roots, etc., cover completely with vodka (rum or gin), label, date and set in your cup board, wait two months, strain off liquid, discard pulp, re-bottle liquid , label, date and store.
Currently, I am making a tincture from our elderberry syrup mix, a blend of, elderberries, cinnamon, cloves, and ginger.

Stay Warm, Spice It Up

Everyone is talking about COLD, SNOW, & BLOWING WINDS. Facebook post are flooded with complaints and everyone I talk to has something to say on the subject. Even those who are winter lovers have had their fill of bitter cold. With spring still weeks away and the winds of March soon upon us, the need to warm up is still a topic of desire.

These spices and herbs can increase circulation and warm the body: ginger, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, black pepper, cayenne pepper, garlic, wasabi, and curry spice blends. Not only for cooking, many of them can be steeped for tea.

An old tradition is to put black pepper or cayenne pepper in your socks. However, beware, some say the cayenne heated up over time and produced skin burns. A better choice, essential oils diluted and used in massage also warm the body. We carry a large selection of warming essential oils.

Tea Steeping Guide

Keurig Single Cup Coffee Makers are a recent fad. Customers often ask me about making tea in their machine. I do not support their use in tea making. Teas require steeping. The chart below is a water temperature and time guide for tea steeping. This chart addresses true teas: white, green, oolong, etc., it does not include herbal teas. For herbal teas, light leafy herbs require more tea and less steep time, roots and seeds require less herb and more steep time. The chart also tells how many times you can infuse (reuse) the same tea. Note that when brewing a caffeinated tea you will get most of the caffeine from your tea in the first cup (up to 80%); each time you re-steep, you will have less and less caffeine.

Everyone Needs Peaceful Sleep

We are not nocturnal. Our bodies function best when we get up with the sunrise, around 5:00 am. This puts a good bedtime at 9:00 or 10:00 pm.

Nightly Routine
A calming nighttime routine will prepare you both physically and mental for the task of falling asleep. Develop a routine of winding down that starts an hour or two before bedtime.

Calm the Mind
Purge your worries by keeping an evening journal that allows you to put life in perspective, include several positive things about your day. This can be as simple as a visit from your favorite outdoor bird. Look for things that brought a smile to your day. Enjoy a cup of you favorite calming tea. Then top it off with 10 or 15 minutes of light reading.

Each week at Market

Each week market brings new as well as repeat customers and interaction with market stand owners and market employees. Slowly, one week/one day at a time I follow their lives, their experiences and share in their gained knowledge. I generally wait on 40 to 60 customers a week and have conversation with another 20 or 30. I would think it fair to say I talk to 60 to 80 people in a market day. I met a young man recently that told me he had read that in a trip to the supermarket you have 3 to 5 personal encounters as opposed to a market shop where you can have 25 to 30. I spend very little time in supermarkets but I can attest to the market side of the equation. Each week I see both planned and chance meetings among friends and family. I witness hugs, laughter and even prayer amongst these chance meetings. Please come out and support the market it is a great tradition worth keeping. See you on Friday!

The power of one man’s word.

I don’t watch the Dr. Oz Show, but I do know he sends me weekly customers. Usually first thing in the morning one of my customers will start the ball rolling with “Dr. Oz says…” That’s when I know it is time to package a few extra bags of that spice or tea. Once he promoted watercress, while I don’t sell watercress the stand directly across from me does. By mid afternoon they sold out of watercress and watercress just isn’t a popular item. Amazing the power of one man’s word. The following week I said to the stand owner, “I noticed you sold a lot of watercress last week.” “Yes,” she said with a look of surprise. Recently, he promoted Yerba Mate Tea as a natural simulate, people use it in place of caffeine. Yes, I sold out. Because of him I can barely keep Turmeric in stock and I now sell Hibiscus tea. While I don’t have extra time to follow the Dr. Oz Show it would be helpful if one of my customers would email me the heads.

House & Home

Holiday events are sold to us by advertisers as quality family time, but you and I both know this is not always the case. When putting together your holiday menu consider that smell can have a dramatic effect on improving our mood and sense of well-being. Citrus is a smell that most people like. It is uplifting and familiar, giving the recipient a warm, trusting and family feeling.   Over the holiday season I like to fragrance my home with the smell of hemlock and a touch of citrus. Orange, tangerine and bergamot are all good choices.

Holiday Spice Tips

Replace all or part of the white sugar in your Pumpkin Pie recipe with brown sugar.  The pumpkin flavor is more pronounced, the sweetness more subdued.

Most cinnamon is 2-2.5% oil content, I sell 5% oil content cinnamon. The taste is superb.

General Guidelines for Tea Making

Here are some general guidelines for tea making:

How much loose tea per cup? My recommendation is 1 tsp. per 8-10 ounce cup. For finely cut black, green and oolong teas a light teaspoon. For leafy herbal teas such as dandelion leaf or lemongrass a heavy teaspoon.

How long to steep a cup of tea? The general rule is 3 to 5 minutes. For black, green and oolong teas stay on the 3 minute side. The leafy herbal teas need to steep longer so go for the whole 5 minutes. Roots, seeds and barks need time to soften to release their flavor and health benefits, so again, 5 minutes or more.

Remember everyone likes their tea different. If you like your teas light then try adding less tea and/or steeping for less time. While some people believe steeping to long makes the drink bitter others like a good strong cup of tea, which might mean a little more tea and a little longer steep time.
